Hiwassee College Talent Search Students Sweep Regional Competition

Hiwassee College Talent Search Students

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. — Hiwassee College Educational Talent Search students did a winning sweep of the competition in a regional event in Atlanta, GA on April 19. Eight middle school students from Monroe and Loudon County schools represented Tennessee after winning the state event in March and the local event in February. In this competition students competed on academic tests with winning students from Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. The following students from Monroe and Loudon County Schools and Sweetwater City Schools represented Hiwassee College Talent Search in the competition: Michelle Chapman – Madisonville Middle School, Kerry Brummitt – Philadelphia Elementary School, Lauren Cain and Brandi Hawk – Rural Vale School, Brandon Darr and Brittani Dixon – Sweetwater Junior High School, and Nakienya Ledford and Jordan Coleman – Tellico Plains Junior High School.

Students competed in three categories. Those categories were: Written Exam, Spelling Test, and Super Quiz. Hiwassee College’s Talent Search students placed first in each of the categories earning them the Overall 1st Place Team Award. In addition to these awards individual trophies were given to the highest individual test scores. Kerry Brummitt from Philadelphia Elementary School made the Highest Individual Score on the Written Exam and Brandon Darr from Sweetwater Junior High School earned the 2nd Highest Individual Score on the Written Exam.

Educational Talent Search is a middle and high school intervention program designed to assist students with academic potential. The program is a Federal Grant administered thru Hiwassee College and located on its campus. Students in grades 6 – 12 are provided a variety of services by Talent Search Educational Advisors including: study skills, test taking skills, time management, preparation for ACT, college financial aid assistance, tutoring, career exploration, and exposure to options for post-secondary education.
