FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 19, 2007
Hiwassee Joins TICUA Go Green! Project
MADISONVILLE, Tenn. Hiwassee College has become a partner in the TICUA Go Green! Project, an initiative supporting college efforts to be good environmental stewards. The project, created by the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA), provides training and other beneficial resources to support college efforts to be good environmental stewards. “Hiwassee College is committed to responsible use of the land and resources,” said Hiwassee President, Dr. Jim Noseworthy. “Our programs in agriculture and forestry, as well as our United Methodist beliefs and values, reflect our resolve to care for God’s creation.” “The purpose of TICUA Go Green! is to ensure our campuses continue to preserve and protect the environment,” said Dr. Susanna Baxter, Vice President for Member Services and Grants at TICUA. “Our member institutions take the responsibility of caring for the environment seriously and this unique agreement is yet another example of their commitment to good environmental stewardship.” TICUA Go Green! creates a relationship with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the agency’s "College and University Compliance Incentive Initiative." The innovative agreement includes "peer-audits" as an approach to environmental education and sustainability. The peer-audit environmental component allows participating colleges and universities to collaborate, helping one another in assessing their campus environments, identifying avenues to further improve the campus environment. The program is modeled after one set up by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Pennsylvania. Two Hiwassee College faculty members have received training to be peer auditors. Dr. Art Fowler, professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Marty Bilderback, assistant professor of Agriculture, attended a three-day training event in Nashville. Fowler and Bilderback will guide Hiwassee leaders in conducting environmental reviews. They also will serve as peer reviewers at other colleges participating in the program. Hiwassee College will have a peer review sometime during the next three years. Participating colleges will take part in educational seminars and training events to gain further knowledge regarding environmental issues and ways in which campuses can contribute to improving the environment. The TICUA Go Green! Project supports teaching and learning, a primary focus of TICUA institutions. Through this new project, faculty and staff will serve as a model for their students and communities for appropriate environmental stewardship. “While the program focuses its efforts at the campus-level,” stated Baxter, “the impact of TICUA Go Green! will reach far beyond the physical campus and into the lives of students, their families and other college constituencies.” Additional information regarding the TICUA Go Green!
